Our Story
The initial formation of Charter Oak Youth Football began
in 1966. The original by-laws were adopted on October
21, 1970. In 1972, the organization consisted of six
teams: 3 Jr. Pee Wee squads, 2 Pee Wee squads and 1 Jr.
Midget squad. They were originally referred to as the
"Romans" and the "Lancers". In 1975, the organization
went to four divisions: Gremlins, Jr. Pee Wee, Pee Wee,
and Jr. Midgets. For the past 15 years we have fielded
Midget, Jr. Midget, Pee Wee, Jr. Pee Wee, Gremlin and 2
Jr. Gremlin Football teams. Our cheer teams only had
about 10 girls per team in the early days. Currently our
cheer teams average 30 girls per team, including our
littlest cheerleaders – the Mascots.
In 1999, the name of the "Lancers" was changed to the
"Chargers" in honor of Charter Oak High School. This
solidified our strong relationship with the school, name
recognition and goodwill.
In 2002, 2003 and 2004 our program experienced the thrill
of victory with cheer teams winning back to back
National Titles and our Gremlin and Jr. Pee Wee football
teams (2003 and 2004 respectively) going to the
conference championship – a first in League history. Our
goal is for the championship title!
With the 2005 Season, a new leadership was founded and
felt strongly that our cheerleaders should be recognized
in our league and “Cheer” was added to “Charter Oak
Youth Football”. Thus our new league name became COYFC –
Charter Oak Youth Football and Cheer which was approved
overwhelmingly by Football and Cheer General Board
Members in the spirit of TRUE unity and community with
all of our children in the program.
